Terms of Service

Last updated: 22 August 2026

These terms govern your use of the Moorlock cloud service at moorlock.io ("the Service"). By creating an account or using the Service you agree to them. The on-device Moorlock agent is separate open-source software, licensed under its own terms (GPLv3).

The Service

Moorlock helps protect laptops against theft. The on-device agent locks or shuts the machine down when a tether is broken (USB cord, keyfile, power adapter, Bluetooth proximity, or a hardware security key), and can enter a recovery mode that reports the machine's location. With a cloud account you can manage a fleet, view an event timeline, store encrypted evidence (webcam/screen captures), see device locations on a map, and send remote actions (lock, sound alarm, mark recovered) that the device carries out at its next check-in. It is a security aid, not a guarantee.

Some features depend on device hardware, operating-system permissions you grant (accessibility, input monitoring, camera, location), and network connectivity. Remote actions are queued and delivered on the device's next check-in, so they are not instantaneous. Evidence and location are optional and off until you enable them.

Third-party services

The Service relies on third parties described in our Privacy Policy — Cloudflare (hosting, storage, email), Stripe (payments), PostHog (analytics), an IP-geolocation service, and CARTO/ OpenStreetMap (map imagery). Your use of the Service is also subject to those providers' terms where they apply. We are not responsible for third-party services outside our control.

Accounts

You're responsible for your account, keeping your credentials safe, and the activity under it. You must give accurate information and be old enough to form a binding contract in your jurisdiction. You may enrol devices you own or are authorised to manage.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • use the Service to surveil, capture evidence from, or track devices or people you don't own or aren't authorised to protect;
  • break the law, infringe others' rights, or interfere with the Service's security or availability;
  • attempt to access another organisation's data, or resell the Service without our agreement.

Evidence capture and location are powerful; use them only on your own devices and in line with the laws that apply to you.

Subscriptions & billing

Paid plans are billed in advance through Stripe on a recurring basis until cancelled. You can cancel at any time; access continues to the end of the paid period. Fees are non-refundable except where required by law. We may change pricing with reasonable notice; changes don't affect the period you've already paid for.

No guarantee & disclaimer

Moorlock reduces the risk and impact of theft but cannot guaranteethat a device will be protected, recovered, or that data will be safe in every scenario — for example against an attacker with administrator access to the machine, or hardware or network failures. The Service is provided "as is" and "as available", without warranties of any kind to the fullest extent permitted by law.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Moorlock is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential losses, or for loss of data, devices, or profits. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Service is limited to the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing here limits liability that cannot be limited by law.

Termination

You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate accounts that breach these terms or create risk to the Service or others.

Changes

We may update these terms and will revise the date above; continued use after a change means you accept it. Material changes will be notified in the product or by email.
